About 20 years ago many of the Stranahan group gathered in Yellowstone Park for some winter fun. Have had many requests to do it again so we have granted their wishes. Many people think that it is 20 below -0- all winter long in Montana but that is like saying there are hurricanes in Florida all summer long. We have storms everyplace but they usually only last a few days. We had a fun beach party at Fort Lauderdale beach in September 2005 and NO HURRICANE!! We plan to have wonderful weather Yellowstone in January 2010.

It is important to call the motel (1 800 228 8158)and tell them you are with the Stranahan Group or with Dixie and give them the dates to receive these rates. These rates are not available on the internet!

There are some people planning to attend who are not from Stranahan and, as always, we welcome everyone - even their friends who we have not met, YET! Some of these people are starting to think they went to school with us!!

What is there to do??

---Snow coach trips to Old Faithful and/or Lower Falls-each is a day trip. Snow coaches are like buses on tracks like a snowmobile. The bus drivers are very knowledgeable. The coaches are heated. You see sights that you would never see if you were not on one! Seeing Lower Falls in the winter is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. This is definitely the way for the 'old people' to go!

--A winter MUST is swimming in the 'hot pots'. Close to Gardiner and just inside the Park is the Boiling River. We walk down there and get into the water where it meets the Gardner River(spelled without the 'i'). The closer to the Gardner River, the colder the water. I believe the water is close to boiling where it comes out of the ground.

--The road thru the north end of the Park is opened all winter because the children from Cooke City go to school in Gardiner(about 50 miles). That is the area where many of the wolves are. We saw some last fall. It is also the area where Beverly Weiss Shaffner made a buffalo mad and he charged us - BUT - I floored it and he missed. It is a fun trip over to the NE side for lunch.

--Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman-dinosaurs and other stuff

--Snow skiing in Bozeman

--Ice skating at Mammoth

--Snowshoeing

--Snowmobiling

--Cross-country skiing

NO DRESS-UP days or nights!

If some of you are wanting a roommate, let me know. I know of a few people who may be coming alone. Also, if you give me some idea as to when and where you are arriving, I may be able to hook up a few of you with rides. Bozeman Montana is the closest airport. Billings is about 180 miles.

I have never been to this motel when there were not elk in the front yard!

If you have questions or want to discuss this give Wanda a call at the motel number or contact me.

Sebring "Gathering" - April 18 - 20, 2008
Post-Reunion Update!

Hello to All!!

The Highlands County classmates who put on the Sebring mini-reunion the weekend of April 18 -20 simply outdid themselves! They provided a wonderful weekend for the 100 or so attendees who traveled to the middle of the state for this event which involved 8 months of planning. From the massive amounts of hors d'ouvres contributed by the "Sebring Dragons" for the Friday evening party to the reasonably-priced cash bar to the excellent decorations, and the delicious Saturday evening buffet, it was all outstanding! There was even an Elvis impersonator for entertainment!

Attendees were welcomed by Sebring Dragons who manned a reception table the entire weekend and were given a "goodie bag" containing a program, a list of everyone there, brochures of local information and some orange and blue candies. Next to the table was a display of every classmate who attended! A sign over a door welcomed folks to the "Dragon's Den," a large room for gathering where there was an array of food and a well-stocked bar. The original Dragon's Den was nothing like this!!

Our Highlands County Classmates / Hosts were: Fred & Neyda Blake, Steve & Alayne (Wolverton) Bush, Sue (Huffman) Camaraire, Richard & Pat Crowley, Fran (Harwell) Oliver, Mike & Mary Swaine, Karin Kraai Wenger, Sam & Marilyn (Kalie) Wilkin, Alan & Jane Wolverton, Ken & Paulette (Lemieux) Krug, Robert & Francine (Camaraire) Whitman and Dane Jensen.

A special thanks to Karin Kraai Wenger for the lovely centerpieces which she designed and created; and to Diana Dodge for supplying little orange and blue candies with "Sebring Dragons - 2008" embedded in them.

Those who attended were Larry & Carole (Stiles) Adams, David Albury, Rick Albury, Ruth (Rigdon) Barnes, Walter & Alice (Drake) Berg, Bill & Barb Briley, Jim Brubaker, Helen (Merritt) Bryan, Dick Buntrock, Bob & Theo (Jones) Byrne, Bob & Cheryl Chambless, Sandy (Croft) Clowney, Richard & Pat Crowley, Gary & Sandy Dahlhofer, Mike & Carol Dew, Victor & Evanne DiGenti, Diana Dodge, Luckey Dodge, Sharon (Cookie Rupp) Fay, Mike & Laurette Fuller, John & Pat Gettinger, Mike & Mary Lou Grizzle, Jimmy Hall, Dane Hancock, Bob & Judy (Wilson) Handy, Jack Hartfield, Sam (Jane) Heede, Will & Bev Bryan Hoppe, Ron & Sandy Jones, Dixie Joyner, Karen lambert, John Lamon, Walt & Mickey Hanes Lee, Joann (Purvis) Long, Jeff & Cindi MacNeir, Ted & Alice Mallory, Judy (Van Gorder) Mazurek, Torchy (Lawson) McClure, Paul & Lynn Mize, Mike & Carol Mucci, Dennis O'Bea, Don & Becky O'Neal, Ann (Harvey) Ottaviano, Jerry & Jean (Gronquist) Ray, Doyle & Linda Raybon, Irene (Barth) Russ, Hal & Kathie (Koberstein) Schmidt, Buck & Suzanne (Spangler) Seeley, Bev (Weiss) Shaffner, Jackie Shaw, Kay (Kress) Ullom, and Doug & Maureen Wilson.

Karin and Marilyn said I should add, "Thanks to everyone who attended. We were overwhelmed by the turnout! Hope to see the rest of you at our 50th!"

And to them and all the Sebring Dragons - hats off for a wonderful weekend at a very reasonable cost! Well done!!

Dixie Organizes 50th Reunion Cruise
January 12 - 17, 2009

Hi Fellow Alumni!!

When we started discussing a 50th reunion, many people wanted a cruise so we talked about having one before or after the reunion in Ft. Lauderdale. At the time we were thinking we would have the reunion in March or April. Since it has been decided that the reunion will be in June, some of us decided to go ahead and have a cruise in the winter so it has been set up for January 12-17, 2009. This will allow us to have a summer and a winter event.

We will have a 'Bon Voyage' party at the Elbo Room on Sunday, January 11, 2009 starting at 4:00 PM. Anyone and everyone is invited whether cruising or not!

I have been working with Sid Strohaver to set up the cruise. We started earlier this year and the ship was wide open. It is rapidly filling so we just said we will go with this. There are many cabins (including suites) other than the ones listed. The listed ones are specifically set aside for us and we can definitely book others. I was unable to guess what each person might choose so I just had her hold these.

There is always cruise insurance available in case of an emergency.

PLEASE share this with any and all of your friends. Everyone is invited.

We need to have our initial deposit in by May 27!!! The final payment will be due on October 22, 2008.

For All the information about the cruise, go to Cruise Information

To register, go to Registration Form

Thanks,

Dixie Joyner, Class of '59

Hello Stranahan Classmates!

Your Stranahan classmates in Highlands County would like to invite you to a “Gathering” in Sebring during the April 18th weekend (April 18, 19, 20). We have selected the historic Kenilworth Lodge in Sebring (built in 1916) as our activity center.

Sebring is approximately 125 miles north of Ft Lauderdale, in the center of the state.

The purpose of this message is to determine the number of classmates/spouses who would be interested in joining us. We need to know approximately how many hotel rooms to block, and also whether we should commit to book a reception/banquet room. We have contacted the hotel and they have advised room rates for our gathering would be $67.49/nite for a king or two doubles.

If you wish, you can book your room right now by calling the Kenilworth Lodge directly 863-385-0111 and mention “Stranahan Gathering.” Check out their web site Kenilworth Lodge for additional information and pictures about the Lodge.

We are a small rural community with lots of lakes, golf courses, fishing, outdoor activities, etc. For additional information on Highlands County visit the Highlands County Visitors Bureau.

Walk For Life - Update

From Ruth Rigdon Barnes regarding the "Walk For Life" in honor of Randy Ward:
The "Walk For Life" raised $500,000.00 for the American Cancer Society. Our team was second in donations and we raised $17,450.00.

I want to thank everyone from Stranahan who contributed and those who took the time to e-mail me about their experiences and losses to cancer. We are certainly lucky to have such loving and caring friends from our high school days.
